Papyros Kiln Shelf Paper 20.5"x 82' Roll
PAPYROS™ Kiln Shelf Paper
PAPYROS, is a ceramic-based paper designed for glass fusing. When placed between the kiln shelf and the underside of your glass fusing project, Papyros prevents the glass from sticking to the kiln shelf--ideal for the majority of fusing projects, up to 1600° F.
This shelf paper provides excellent glass/kiln shelf separation on the first use, and frequently in subsequent firings, as well. Post-firing integrity depends on the type of glass used on the project underside (e.g., opal vs transparent), the nature of the project (volume/construction), as well as the final fusing temperature (degree of glass movement in the kiln).
- Papyros can be used either side up.
- Edges of Papyros sheets don’t curl during firing.
- Papyros works with any COE family and any glass. Remember that imperfections on the kiln shelf can transfer through kiln shelf papers, so keep your shelves free of dings, dents and debris.
- Papyros can be re-used one or more times if the fused projects are lifted carefully off of the kiln shelf without damaging the paper. Transparent glasses yield the best results; opal glasses are less likely to peel back without pulling up the paper. A project’s design, along with the firing schedule used, can also impact how many firings you can get from a single piece. Lower temperature firings, i.e., tack fuse schedules generally yield better results than full fuse schedules due to expansion or contraction. A good rule of thumb is if there is a tear or hole in the sheet, then you will need to use a new sheet for your next project.
How to clean-up: When you’re ready to dispose of a sheet of Papyros, use one of the three methods below:
1. Fold sides of the sheet over onto itself into a small stack, using a studio-dedicated spatula (as if folding a crêpe or omelet) and lift the pile into a lined trash basket. Close lid promptly.
2. Tilt your kiln shelf and slide the expired paper into a lined trash basket (with a fitted lid) – close lid promptly
3. Vacuum up the expired paper using a shop-vac equipped with a HEPA filter.
Minimizing Dust in Your Studio: If using a Shop Vac, ensure that your HEPA filters are changed on a regular basis so the vacuum functions correctly. When using a trash basket, be sure to empty into a receptacle with a fitted lid that is lined with a plastic bag and is used exclusively for kiln shelf paper disposal. Empty trash bags on a regular basis.
IMPORTANT: Remember to always wear respiratory protection. Papyros is safe to use. As with any ceramic fiber-based product, use common sense safety practices.
Here’s a few basic steps:
Keeping your kiln room clean is always recommended. When working with Papyros, always:
1. Wear gloves when handling
2. Avoid breathing residual dust when cutting pre-fused PAPYROS, or cleaning post-fired PAPYROS from kiln shelves
3. Wear a respirator that is NIOSH-approved for dusts
4. Wear safety glasses with side shields
